+1

On A.J.'s recommendation we bought the MAXCAP 90, didn't have the budget for the MAXCAP UHE 100.

We had some TDS issues with our source water which clogged the prefilters in our first 60 gallons of purified water, but the great people at SpectraPure are helping us out with our configuration so we get the most our of the system.

I strongly recommend their product.

My research led me to purchase a Water General 6 stage RO/DI unit on ebay. Happy with the quality of the product and quality of water. http://www.watergeneral.com/product01.aspx
Seems to be a few comparable units in the $130-$150 range.

Most of the RO/DI units are going to be very similar, there are only a few companies that actually produce the membranes and filters, and many many company's that put there name on them and sell them. Find a nice 5-6 stage unit with a tank if you want to use it for drinking also, if it uses standard filters and membranes you are probably in pretty good shape

Buckeye Field Supply has some great units for reasonable prices.
Their customer service is excellent. They answer all of my questions very quickly, and I didn't even buy an RO/DI unit from them! (yet!)

Spectrapur is a great system, BUT........ $900.00 For 0.0 TDS

Filter Guys Ocean Reef + 1......$199.00 for 0.0 TDS

Why pay $700.00 more for the same TDS reading ???

The SpectraPure MAXCAP 90 is only $350 and 0.0 TDS. The MAXCAP UHE 100 is $900. The benefit with the UHE is that you get a much better rejection rate.

Also, with the MAXCAPs you get 600 gallons out of the first DI cartridge and 1800 gallons out of the second DI cartridge.

I have not had any experience with other RO/DI systems but my experience with the SpectraPure Product and Company has been a very good one. I don't regret the higher cost for a better product and service.

DO NOT get caught up in the E Bay number of "STAGES" game!
Stages don't mean a hill of beans. For an RO system you need 3 stages and for an RO/DI you need 4, thats it in most cases. The extra crap ebay vendors call stages are worthless.

Lets do a quick review:
Filters direct 5 or 6 stages and all the others just like it.
1. Large micron prefilter about as useful as a screen door
2. Large micron carbon or in some cases granular carbon, both extremely low chlorine capacity.
3. another worthless low capacity coconut carbon block, often of unknown micron size and still less than 10,000 gallons capacity
4. membrane- often a 100 GPD nanofilter and not even a 98% rejection rate RO membrane. Some are even Chinese knockoff not even approved for sale in the US.
5. a little dinky 6 or 9 oz horizontal hollow tube with some outdated DI bobbing around in it.
6. sometimes a duplicate of number 5.
7. sometimes a granular activated carbon or charcoal drinking water taste and odor filter intended for drinking water with no use in a reef system. But hey its another "Stage" !

Now a good system which costs about $169
1. a 1 micron high quality prefilter
2. a 0.6 microm Matrixx Chlorin Guzzler 20,000 gallon capacity carbon block
3. a Dow Filmtec 75 GPD true 96-98% RO membrane
4. a full sized vertical refillable 20 oz capacity 10" standard configuration canister and cartridge type true DI filter with bottom up flow for true deionization.

Thats it and it will outperform and outlast any of the first ones any day of the week guaranteed.

Don't even thing about ebay garbage if you are really wanting reef quality water. Why cut corners when water is the main ingredient of your system.

If you really want the best look at the MaxCap systems at Spectrapure. Individually hand tested and guaranteed 98+% rejection rate membranes, custom hand blended DI resins, a 0.2 or 0.5 micron absolute rated prefilter, a 0.5 micron 20,000 gallon carbon block, read up on the differences in their Sponsors Forum and you will see there is nothing on the market even close in both performance and lifespan.

Uh, I sorry.

0 tds seemed good to me. Is there something else I should be measuring?

Of course, as I stated, I can't comment on longevity yet which may be where you see the difference in price (with as big a difference in price you have to be giving something up).
