nitrates

Hello all, Im new to this site but have read alot of the threads. Im transitioning my softy tank to SPS dominant reef. I have to get my nitrates down at present they sit at 50 per salifert test. I started big water changes, and 5 days ago I started 2 part carbon source. Ive not noticed any change in my protein skimmer. When should I expect the skimate to take off? I have a total water volume of about 200 gal. . I use aquaC EV 180 skimmer. I am dosing 5cc/day of the carbon. I am using cheto in my refugium already. Any thoughts are appreciated. Ive had this system going about 6 yrs.

To Reef Central

move very slowly with addictions of carbon, just monitor your nitrates and when they start to drop hold at that level of carbon input
