these are making a strong stance in our industry it seems, but they are generally colder water fish...

how succesful can these fish be kept in normal reef waters of around 78*?

Probably wouldn't live very long. they normally live in waters that are about 68 to 72 degrees. i've also heard from somewhere that their normal life span is only about a year anyway.

They are naturally short lived, but live even shorter at tropical temps. If you get one to live for 6 months in 80 degree water you've done well.

I agree with all above; these fish live in an environment that generally doesn't include many other inhabitants that are often available in the reef trade.

I had a well established 10 gallon that I had been using to grow macro algae for the Tang and pod/mysids and such and converted to a separate species tank for the Catalinas. I've had 4 in there now for 7 months and they're delightful.

I turned the heater in there way down so the tank runs about the temp of the house, which is usually about 70.

Other than some cool water snails, I don't try to keep anything in there with them.

They're cute, cute little fish with loads of personality.
