After seeing this thread yesterday I set out a bucket to collect some rain water.I only ran a TDS on it and got 260! This Is from outside of Cincinnati Ohio. For SW RO/DI all the way!

The run off is what kills the things in the ocean and lakes. The pesticides and chemicals used in farming, the oil spills that get into the sewage, the sediment runoff, the small bits of chemicals that you use to clean your car, it all goes into the ocean one way or another.

if i lived on the coast, i wouldnt worry at all about storms coming from offshore.

rainwater will test 1-10 in a heavy downpour, after the air has been cleansed of dust and airborn particles like pollen.

dont ever collect water that has ran off a roof or tree or anything really, except what you use to trap it. i always used a very large tarp, big enough to cover a houses roof, and had it funnel into a large barrel then had pvc pipe running to barrels in my basement, a heavy downpour with a large tarp will fill 4 55 gallon barrels in a short time.

test its ph, it should be 6.5-7.

theres nothing wrong with rainwater, where do you think rivers and lakes get theier water from?.

so when was it that you got 1-10ppm on the tds meter???? back in 1800s? I'm not trying to insult or start anything, but I live in california, and what I said earlier in the thread "I bet the tds will read 100ppm+" is true from other peoples testing also and they don't even live in california (especially if it's socal, with all that pollution).
What I would do is test it out yourself man, see it for yourself. and honestly, we do have people here on rc that are immature and always wanna start something, but I can say and vouch for many many reefers here on rc, that the majority (75% at least) are very nice and helpful. by far one of the best reef online communities.

Thousands of people pee in the ocean as well so does that mean you should have the neighborhood kids over for a pee session?

what would worry me would be the risk of chemicals from industrial funnels that pump crap into the air, the ocean is so massive that it can probably take it, but my tank is only 92.5 us gallons and if i put rain water which was contaminated in there, the whole thing would surely crash, i dont doubt that some guys have used it and not had problems, however it only has to be contaminated once and thousands of dollars of stock and years of hard work is dumped down the toilet, ro-di is much much safer
