Help w/Nemo on its way out :(
Hi guys,
My male perc for the past 4 years is not doing well I came home from work today and saw it laying on its side. I found out that my N03 was high 10 ppm. I found out that my impellor's ceramic shaft on my Mag3 had broken down over the weekend and skimmer had not been functioning well. I have separated my perc in a 5 gallon tank with fresh water and a heater. It moves very little and breathes very fast. Is there anything else I can do to help him? Is it too late or will he have a 2nd chance? thanks. |

Sometimes your LFS will take him in and place it in a tank for a little rehab, depends on how much you trust them and their set up.

Just monitor the ammonia good on the 5 gallon tank and hope the perc survives. If there is no visible signs of disease then it is hard to treat it other then what you did I hope the outcome here is positive

if its breathing hard, maybe your oxygen level is low, how are your powerhead positioned? |

Yes it is fresh saltwater, I have a small pump running to circulate the water.
I checked NH4 and NO2 and they were both 0 I'm surprised that the female perc and my other fish were not affected by this?? I'm also making more new water to make water change. Is 20 gallons enough for a 55g? and I need to change water slowly to prevent shock? thanks |

I am sorry I read the post wrong--thought you meant ammonia not nitrites. That level of nitrites would not bother the perc.
Still do the water change as preventative in case there is something in the tank. 20 gals is great

Thats what I was thinking, Nitrates (NO3) shouldn't kill a fish. I am not seeing anything physical such as damage or sign of disease. It is just laying on its side and breathing. It does however move close to the heater which I'm a bit nervous about.

Bought two false percs two days ago from LFS. Both had ich and both do the laying on the side thing...
The other two false percs I have in my other tank do not have ich and they do not lay on their sides... Maybe he has ich or some other parasite? |

it could have a internal infection, is its stomach bloated? fins redish, some parasites we cant see until its to late, try some meds in the hospital tank or actually lowering Saltinity slowly can kill some parasites if thats what it is.

My clown had similar symptoms and I gave him a fresh water dip for 40 seconds to kill any parasites. These saltwater parasites need a certain sg level to live and once they hit fresh water, they die off. Just make sure your ph is the same as your saltwater and the temp is the same. My nemo is now doing the back stroke. Best of luck
Ps. If he is showing heavy signs of stress in the fresh water, get him out ASAP. |
