Just clean it it out. You could also fill it up with filter floss or a Powerfilter sponge. Will do the same job.

Is the skimmer in a sump? I've got the same skimmer and I don't use that piece. But, as the other two have said, just rinse it out well and put it back on. It's plastic, so it should last quite a while.

I have the same skimmer. I buy polyfilter sheets at the LFS and cut them to size. Not expensive. I usually replace mine every 1-2 weeks. They accumulte a lot of crud. I figure there has to be a benefit of getting that stuff out of the tank.

Before I started to replace mine, I just rinsed and squeezed in tap water. I suppose if you want to be extra careful, you could use RODI. The filter is not there as a beneficial bacteria medium, it's just there as a mechanical filter, so I wasn't worried about killing the bacteria. Seriously though, I think they get to the point where they need to be ditched and replaced. Just my opinion.

Just scrub it with your hands under tap water, the pores are big it rinses clean very easily.

Maluskeeter, are you talking about the black "sponge" with the hole in the center or the (formerly) white pad that goes beneath it? Anyway, the black filter does rinse easily, the white pad can be replaced with polyfilter (or similar generic filterpad that comes in sheets).

maluskeeter, Drs Foster and Smith carry Polyfilter. But actually, when I looked at the stuff, I realized it isn't really what I use. The Polyfilter is treated to remove chemicals, the stuff I use is much cheaper. I found it hanging on the wall at the LFS where filter stuff is. Here is what looks to be similar, from the "doctors". The stuff I bought is not blue, but I think this serves the same purpose, just a simple mechanical filter

Don't know, but would not think so. I don't think they have pet/fish departments.
