Cloudy Days and dimmable ballasts

I am really interested in getting some feedback from some of the more experienced reefers out there on the subject of dimmable ballasts and the efforts people go to to create cloudy days, sunrise & sunset, so called weather lighting and moon cycles.

How important is this to the reef aquarium?

Is this just a gimmick?

I appreciate any feedback on this topic. I have seen many people get very excited about fancy controllers that generate these changes and i just wonder am i missing the plot.
