Hole distance for glass edge...

Hey,

Just like to know if it's alright to drill 1 3/4" hole 1" from the bottom glass edges at the corner. The glass thickness is 5mm and I'm worried whether it'll crack in the future if I do.

1" is generally regarded as the minimum... perferably add a bit more to be safe if it's not too much trouble?

Also why are you drilling the bottom edges? I'm about to drill mine and will drill near the top edge. Just because predrilled tanks have the bottom of the tank drilled, doesn't mean you have to. Drilling higher is insurance against something going wrong and draining your tank over your floor or flooding your sump should your overflow leak. If you use a standpipe from the bottom, that will at least help prevent any disasters.

jan i'm doing it from the bottom because I'd prefer the plumbing to not show from the back. It'll look much cleaner with everything within the tank, not out.

I want the hole as close to the edge as possible so that the internal box can be made much smaller for this nano sized 23g tank

So should I tell the glass shop to drill 1" from the edge and 1" between each hole. I'm looking into drilling a 3/4" drain and 1/2" return hole side by side at the corner. I need more recommendations from more people :P

well im a fan of the calflow style overflows
basically up top on rear pane of glass and a long and narrow rectangle
this gives good surface skimming and doesnt tanke of a bunch of room. very shallow narrow box.

good luck

I was told 1-1/2 times the diameter away from the edge and the diameter in between holes.
