Diatom bloom so fast in upgrade tank?
I have a post called "Oops. Help. Put too much in" where I added way too much colonize to on Sunday after I upgraded.
I upgraded on Saturday. I have noticed that I am having what might be a diatom bloom. A lot of brown forming on rocks and the seed sand. Is this normal to have this appear in an upgraded tank? I went from a 29 gallon to a 75 with a sump. I know you get them in new cycled tanks, but I am wondering if this is related to my overdosing, or if this is standard procedure. Thanks.

It is standard. Well at least it was for me.

Yes, this is normal when something dramatic is made to the tank (even when changing lighting).

Diatoms are limited by silicate. So it is likely that thereis some in the upgraded tank. When it is used up; they will pass.

Good. I was hoping you all would say that.
I was afraid it was from the 10x accidental dose of colonize that I did. I did upgrade the lights too, though only 5 of the 7 bulbs are on so far. Don't want to shock the nem.

Well if you put in too many bacteria they could die off and feed the diatoms and other nuisance algae the nutirents they need . In the case of the diatoms they would also need the silicate.
