Skimmer recommendations for ~300 gallons?
I'm looking for a skimmer capable of handling ~300 gallons of water volume (this would include a 200 gallon reef, 40 gallon sump, 25 gallon 'fuge and 55 gallon FOWLR tank).
I'm planning medium stocking levels. |

Internal or External? Type of skimmer? ex. Needle wheel, beckett, venturi, etc. Size restaints? |

Of course, this is w/out knowing you budget or goals. But, if I were building a 300, I'd go with an ATB for sure.

I was checking out those ATB skimmers and notice they only ship from the US. I'm in Canada so ideally I'd like to get something local if I can. Just easier than shipping across the border (esp if something goes wrong and I have to ship back).

MSX 250 would work well and they are made in Canada.

Thanks for the recommendations. I was looking at those MSX skimmers and they seem pretty affordable. Are the model #'s the indication of tank size they are designed for? Since I couldn't find any details on the web of max tank size.
I'll have to read up on those C&C skimmers too. |

Saltwater Connection is the one that makes the MSX skimmers, they're out of Canada, I'm sure you've heard of them. The MSX's I guess are slightly under rated, you may get by w/ using the 250 on your system depending on how much bioload you have. Somewhere in the MSX thread is the ratings for low/medium/high bioloads for the MSX's.

I did a Google search, and found this thread on The Reef Tank which ironically references the MSX thread on this site.
Reading those specs, the 250 does sound ideal, although for the extra 50 bucks or so, I might just get the 300. That way if I ever went to even more water volume at least I'd be covered off. |
