Help!!!
ok so im kinda new to this reef thing......i got my tank a 40 breedeer up established and running.i added some soft corals and fish then added some LPS i WAS running 2x 96w PC bulbs but decided it was time for new lighting so i got a 250w HQI since about 2 weeks after adding the light i have had what i believe to be dinoflagelletes. im just wondering if this is normal for adding new light?i know as the corals in my tank adjust to the new light they will expel extra Zooxanthellae witch is basically just dinos if now then what have i done wrong? all my nitrogen by producte =0 (ammonia and such) phosphate also 0.i just started a black out of my light for a day or 2 will this help? sorry for the long post but this tank has been one algae after another.......

WELCOME to RC!
I hope that you let this tank cycle before adding stuff. Anyways it's probably just a cyanobacteria bloom. Just about every new tank goes through a bunch of different nuisance algaes before it "matures".What makes you think it's dino's?Does the mat have long whispy stands?

i think its that since its brownish green snotty blobs with air bubbles in them.tank is around 4 months old the LR is 5+ years old as it came out of a friends tank that he was getting rid of. theres only been live stock in the tank for about 6-8 weeks now i went through the cyano and diatom blooms already.theres only 3 small fishes in the tank. i suppose the main reason i suspect dinos is the rapid decline of my snails and hermits.ive lost a few of them now.

The best way I know of to knock out dinos is to keep the PH high and shut down your lights for 3 days.I had this happen in my cycled QT tank.I shut the lights down(very dark as it's in the basement)and started to top off with kalkwasser every night.
Got the PH in there upwards of 8.2-8.5.If you can rig up some reliable way of dripping kalk then that's the best way.
