When I started my 45 gal, I had lots of live rock and put 10 snail and about 20 crabs in to start. I have been adding them as they "disappear" or get eaten. Right now I would say there seriously might be 40 crabs in that tank. I think I read somewhere you should have 1 crab per gallon of water. But don't quote me on that because it could be totally wrong. it probably depends on how much live rock you have and how much they need to "Clean up". Hope this helps.

Although the 45 is now mostly Fish only and some live rock for hiding spaces. Most of the crabs have made their way to my 90. There are crabs all over in my 90 gal. Just remember they will outgrow their shells and need other shells to get into. I suggest buying some larger empty crab shells or they will try to eat and steal your snails shells.

You may want to avoid crabs altogether, as they will kill your snails for their shells. I've got a very wide variety of snails in my DT and they keep it pretty well cleaned (there are a few crabs though).
