Elegance coral

I had it for more than a week it has been opening well since in my tank but yesterday it did not full open and today it looks smaller. What is the problem ? I feed it some raw shrimp the day before.

Maybe there's a big head that keeps looking at it and making it feel bad about itself.

JK, Being a member for a year you should know to post all of your water parameters when you ask a question like this.

Also elegance corals have a bad survival rate.

Salinity?
Anything happen unusual in the last few days?
New additions to the tank, Water changes, Temp swings, etc... ?
Another coral close by that could be attacking it?

the inportant question when it comes to elegance corals are what type of light do you have and how high up is the elegance. I have done some research on these and in days past the most of them originated from shallow reefs....not anymore they are being harvested from deeper reefs where the conditions are harder to match. Honestly as much as I love these corals I stay away and recommend most reefers do.....its a bit too late for that now....so you need to find out some info to improve your chances....you need to find out where in the world this was harvested from and that should let you know if it needs more or less light....as well as raising temp and salinity......

about 1 out of 10 of these thing actually survive the first year. Most likely it will go back and forth and eventually die. If its a aussie they are supposed to be better. I read a very interesting article here on RC about them a few months ago. It told of how the packed them made really hurt them, maybe from diease. I dont remember all the details but i do remember that i dont need to buy one unless its a aussie. I'll look for the article. But I do wish you good luck, I hate to see a coral die and hate to see a man/woman drop 100 dollars on a coral that is destined to die. good luck!! keep us posted

what is it not happy about ? I got 8 tube ATI t5s with individual reflectors and it is quite high to the tubes. It is suppose to be an Aussie elegance. Will feeding it make it react that way ?

The point about elegance corals doing poorly in captivity seems to be linked to the way they are collected. It used to be that many elegance corals were free standing, on sandy reef areas, and easily picked up without damaging them. Lately, there seems to be evidence that they are getting harder to find, and not as easy to collect. There is also the issue of transport, and shipping them.

They used to be "easy" corals to keep, but now they seem to be difficult.

Also, many corals show reduced polyp extension after being fed. It's digesting food, and might take a few days to extend again. Give it a bit of time, and resist the urge to make changes to your tank.

Australian Elegance corals do significantly better than the Indo ones which almost never survive. These corals are highly susceptible to tissue damage so be very careful with it. They do not like high light or high flow. Most people keep them on a sandy substrate although they do ok on rocks if there is no abrasion of tissue.

Thanks for the input. Can anyone tell the difference between an aussie and indo elegance ? I would like to rely on myself to tell them apart and not the lfs.

Usually the price is the easiest way of telling the difference. Aussies have an expensive plain ticket. But their survival rate makes them worth it IMO. My Elegance retracts for a couple days a month then comes back normal within a few days. I would say for now to place it on the sandbed and in indirect current if possible.

I have also heard elegance is prone to a prozoan attack look for brown jelly like substance on it if it has it a freshwater dip may be in order

The price basically. And if it's alive in 6 months its probably an Aussie lol.

I would also take a look at this thread in the LPS forum. There a lot of members that have experience with elegance there.

still cannot differentiate between indo and aussie other than the probable disk colour. Well I will keep an update on my elegance here. I have put it on the sandbed away from direct light and flow.

If you are going to dip an elegance coral, do not use a fresh water dip. Use a product called Revive. You will have to google it to find it as I have lost the link.
