protein skimmer?

I have had FOWLR tanks set up for over 2 years now with no skimmer and no problems.
I am putting a skimmer on my 180 now. What are the improvements, if any, that I can expect to see in my tank? I feel so nieve on this issue.

In a FOWLR, you might see clearer water, reduced algae, and better coralline growth.
