bio balls

hey yall. i was reading thru some threads and saw that i should not use bio balls so i took them out of my canister filter. im hoping that will help my nitrates fall a bit. i dont have room under my stand for a sump or refuge. is there anything else i can do to help keep my nitrates down. currently i do a water change every week but my nitrates are still at 20ppm. also what plants can i use in my tank to help reduce them.

Put liverock rubble instead of the balls but really you won't see a difference unless you find the real cause and IMO add a refugium
