Overflow

I have a question about my overflow. It's built in in the corner. Hole in the bottom of the tank and black some kinda plexi or close making two walls blocking out the rest of the water. My question is what should be in the column where the overflow water runs down into the bottom hole. Right now it is full of Bioballs but what I have read on here I think those need to go. Anyone have any suggestions on what needs to be in there if anything?? Thanks

yes, look up Durso Standpipe on google to see how to make plumbing that will keep your overflow from being noisy

My overflow has never made any noise like it is. Is this because it has the Bioballs? Will noise be a problem when I get rid of them??
