u-tube over flow
Hey guys and girls,
I'm going to be changing my cpr over flows very soon, I just haven't had the time to install my new eshopps over flow. Its rated at 800 gph and I was thinking of replacing my return pump to an eheim 1250 or mag drive 3 about 300 gph with 0 head. Now I have read that if the flow is too SLOW bubbles will accumulate and eventually the u-tube will lose siphon. Would adding a shut off valve to the eshopps plumbing to slow down the flow to the sump prevent the bubbles from accumulating? Or am I out of luck and I should just sell them? (I currently have an eheim 1260 as my return) thanks |

no, this will not help you, it is rated for 800gph and won't run at 800 but will be close and needs to run near maximum efficiency to push the air bubbles out of the u tube, would recommend going with a 1000-1200 gph return pump that you can idle down to the point were your overflow is able to flow and not keep bubbles

Good idea ditching the CPR and moving to a U tube model. You need at least 200 GPH to keep bubbles from accumulating in a typical U Tube overflow. Some people have had issues with Eshoppes overflows and they may need more. I would not use a 1250 as it may not provide enough flow. I would keep the 1260.

I was debating the same thing i want to get the bigger Eshopps 800 gph over the 300 and get a quite one pump as a return. I was looking at the 4000 model. From the sump to the top of the tank its about 6ft so it would be pushing about 600 gph would this work ok?http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...fm?pCatId=9849

I have the Eshopps 300 on my 36g corner with a QO 3000 return pump. I think a QO 4000 model would work fine on the Eshopps 800 model. Always put a ball valve on it to adjust the flow.
I put a ball valve on my overflow drain as well in case I want to service the sump... otherwise drain stays wide open.

so the concensus here is get another overflow?
I did some research and realize the only difference between the 300 and 800 is 2". Would I be able to get the u-tube to use in the 800 to convert it to a 300? |

Lifereef all the way...great build, U-tube, pretty much can't loose a siphon, and with the "silencer" mine is almost silent.
