Coral Touching

You know -- I am confused. I see the guy's aquarium for TOTM and he has all these corals that look like they are touching each other. I have never had anything but bad luck if any of my corals touch. My lobo got burned by my acans, my acro is currently beating up my birdsnest. Honestly --- is there a formula for putting corals next to each other? I know that, for example, people put hammers, torches and frogspawn so they are touching and it works -- but is there anything else?

I've always had one coral start growing over the other when they are close... maybe that's what's going on in the system you're talking about, and so it appears they're growing together (but in reality one is taking over the other).

So is there a way to prune them so they grow near but do not touch? I am curious how it works. My birdsnest grew over towards the acro -- the branch that was near got poisoned and fell off. Now the whole "trunk" is turning white even though they are not touching anymore. I know they shoot out mesentrial filaments to attack other corals so that's what I don't understand.

When you say grow over -- do you mean from a height perspective? Like layering?

How do people get that filled in look without them going to war? I mean a corals job is to kill out all competition ....

By growing over I mean encrusting... that's what I've experienced. Most of the time I just frag off the parts that come close to each other, and then sell the frags.

But how close do you let them get?

Sometimes as close to 1/4 or less, but it depends on the species. A pavona is going to start throwing streamers up to an inch away to kill any close competitors, but a montipora may have to actually start encrusting the other coral before I notice any die-off.

So here's the problem -- I don't know if something else is going wrong -- look at these pics. The web stuff bugs me. Nothing has been added to my tank in a long time ...

The birdsnest looks like it is dying off completely but the web stuff on the acro is bothersome.

This is a little poci and it has similar symptoms ...
