Hair Algae on Glass

I am starting to get small hair algae on the glass. I remember seeing something on Reef Central about it but can't find it, can anyone help with the reason I'm getting it?

It's not a very simple answer, there could be a multitude of reasons. You'll need to describe your system in detail to get any decent input, but usually its a result of too much import (food) without enough export (skimming, water changes, siphoning, etc). This leads to an excess of nutrients and fuel for algae.

Also, I've just read that some of the eggcrates we use in our tanks are made of styrene, and it leaks chemicals that feed hair algae. So don't put any eggcrates in unless they are the acrylic type. The Home Depot ones are most likely styrene. Just something I found that was interesting and seems to fit with this thread.

It is true. I have the acrylic egg crate in my frag tank and it too a while before I was able to find it.
