looking to downgrade one of my two 3's to a smaller size. Dual 3's seem to be too much flow for my tank, and corals are whippn all over no matter where I position them.

Two K3s in a 50g will kill mushrooms. I speak from experience.

I have a 46g and have experimented with all sorts of configurations of koralias. I have a "show" type rock covered in huge red mushrooms that shrivels to nothing when I go with anything more than 2 K1s. I've recently added a strategically-placed k-nano for my small "sps zone". We'll see how that goes. (additionally, there is a mag3 in my tank that powers my skimmer, which contributes to the flow)

I'd go with K2s MAX if your intention is a fowlr with some mushrooms in it.

Honestly, I feel like I spend most of my time running around this forum correcting misconceptions about flow. The standard answer around here is to blast away with everything you've got. Flow totally depends on the requirements of the tank occupants!!!

Your not raving or orating at all--you make a good point with one exception:

I agree with you that you have to match the flow to the needs of your corals
but I don't agree that the standard answer here is "blast away with everything you got"

Since I have a high tank I have been able to create zones of flow from the top of my reef down. This accomodates sps's that need to be placed at the top of my reef and need the full power of my halides(which are only 150 watt)
Lower flow mushrooms etc can be placed on the middle of the reef or near the bottom.

that said this is why I feel you need to have a number of power heads and korilias in your tank so that you can direct and regulate the amount of flow to different areas of your tank.
The surface should be turbulant and the substrated should have some flow or your going to end up with cyano, algae etc.
Korilias 4 are 1200 gph and you can mod a maxijet to get 1600 gal per hour---that's a big blast and is not good for tanks around 70al or less for sure
However it is good to have between 20-40 times the tank volume in gph in all tanks.
How can this be accomplished---by using less gph korilias etc that don't blast the heck out of the tank but you have the flexibility to redirect them and adding together they give you a good combined flow

eg in my 120 I have 2 korilias 4 and o korilia 3 plus a maxijet on a variable timer to interrupt the flow
combining them and doing the math:
800 + 1200 + 1200 +290= ~3500 gph and I am not blasting the heck out of anything in my tank.

so I agree with you--its all about meeting the flow requirements of the corals in your tank
here is a picture of the placement of my powerheads

Thanks Capn!
I agree with you as well. When I see that someone is thinking of using 2 K3s in a 50g, and one of the first responses is that they should use K4s instead, my head spins. Then when the OP indicates that the goal is a FOWLR with some shrooms and zoas....well, that initial advice looks even worse. LOL

I also agree that multiple smaller units are preferable to two big ones. Especially with Koralias, the flow is dispersed and not as straighforward as typical ph's regarding optimal placement.

YESSSS!!!! that's what I thought! Originally I was going to go with K2s but then everyone was like no no no MORE flow MORE flow.... and so I started rethinking!
Now I'm thinking this....Perhaps I'll try one K2 then see if I want another K2 or a K3?
Besides which I do still have the Maxi Jet in there (350 GPH) and the filter power head.. so it's not as if it's completely devoid of flow at the present time...

i recently got a pair of K3s for my 30g tank. thats right, i said two K3s for a 30g tank. im still in the build process so i havent gotten to use them with livestock yet, but i did put them in the tank when i was doing my leak test. i placed them on opposite sides of the tank near the top with them angled toward each other and slightly up. they put out some decent flow, but the bits of debris in the bottom of my tank were hardly moving at all. ill have to see how things go once i fill the tank with rock, sand, etc. but i dont think it will be too much for anything i want to keep. the koralias have a very dispersed flow pattern and its all about placement. i also decided on K3s instead of K2s in the hopes that Hydor will release the rumored controller ive been hearing about. hopefully it will allow me to dial down the flow if need be.

well your almost there Larah---high flow is excellent --its how you have setup your hardware(pumps to acheive it) the type of flow and who(corals) are getting more or less of it

I have to Korilia 4's on my 55 reef. I don't know how you have your rock work and lights setup. But you good put the softies towards the bottom of the tank and place the arco's towards the top to get better flow. Since most softies don't need much light and arco's do. It will work well. Well it does in my tank anyways. Also the flow near the bottom is not that strong as it is near the top of the tank.

If I were to do it again, I would add 3 Korilia 2s, instead of 2 Korilia 3s. I'm seeing that it is more important WHERE you place your PHs, and can increase/reduce flow in the overall tank depending on where you put them.

Siwelk, did you build your tank already, I am curious about your powerhead positions, I am triying to using 2 K2s in my 30G

You should be fine with the 2 k2's in your 30 gal. If you run into problems with the substrate moving. Run one high in your tank to churn the surface area and run the other low in your tank, but pointing up to the surface.
This will also create zones of flow quite nicely
