Niger Trigger

There is about a 5 inch Niger Trigger at the lfs and I was thinking about keeping him in my 180 fowlr. Is $60 a good price for him. He has no ich spots, is nice and plump, and active. How is there general aggression???

The current inhabitants are:

4 inch Yellow Tang
4 inch Hippo Tang
3 inch Hawkfish
6 inch Sailfin Tang
3 inch Bursa Trigger
7 inch Vlamangii tang... Dont worry I am planning for a much larger tank

There is also a same size Huma Trigger for the same price and condition. Could I add him instead of the Niger Trigger. Or would he be incompatable with my Bursa?

And there is a nice 4 inch Porcupine Puffer there too. Would he be compatible with my current inhabitants??

I would QT for at least 6 weeks before adding to the DT if I decide to choose one.

Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure I wont regret my decision.

Thanks for your time.

any of your choices would be fine. IMO

Thanks for your help. In your oppinion what do you think you would do, based on color, character, or hardiness. Also do you think 60 bucks is a reasonable price for a healthy huma, or niger trigger??

Forgot to add that the Huma, and Niger trigger have been there for a month. But the Porcupine has only been there for 2 weeks.

If you want the porcupine give that a couple more weeks at the lfs. Maybe they will hold it for you if you really want it?

Was just on Wet Web media and it sais that Niger Triggers and Humas are very aggressive. Now I am realy confused

Does any one have experience with these two species as adults?

Dont know if this helps but the two triggers are in the same tank together and show no aggresion.

Thats not true. Nigers and Humas are two of the more peaceful triggers. Since you already have the bursa, id personally go with the niger. I have one that i got at 3in for 36$ awhile ago. With a good amount of food he has grown quite a bit. He's about 6in now and is by far one of my favorite fish in my tank. He is finally getting his streamers on the tail, and his teeth are turning a nice bright red as comes with adulthood. A great fish you have a chance of getting and a great price :] The puffer would be a nice choice aswell but they have problems with internal parisites/worms, so if you like him id ask the store to hold him for a month (offer a deposit) to make sure all is well ;]

GO FOR THE NIGER !!!! XD
And be sure to post pictures if you get him.

Thanks Kyle!

How is your aquascape arranged in your tank??

Any pictures?

How large are your triggers and would you recomend me getting a smaller sized trigger or do you think 5 inches is still reasonable??

Thanks

Five inches is a good size, they grow to 12" or so. I don't have any recent pictures, but will be taking a set today to post on my CORA forum. I have a 180 with maybe 85% lace rock and 15% live rock, arranged fairly open for coral growth, but plenty of caves and other places for fish to hide. My Bluethroat is around 7-8", as is my Black Durgeon, but my Niger is only 4-5" now. The Niger is pretty fearless, but has not shown any aggression in my tank. He's out front all the time and is a beautiful purple color with small streamers on his tail.

I've read that the Niger, while fairly peaceful, can be aggressive if you introduce them at a large size. Mine was introduced fairly small and I had no problems.

So I guess it really depends on the fish itself and not the species in general.

Bob how big was your trigger and what inhabitants were with him and the size of the tank?

Thanks

I have a LFS guy that's very experienced with them, he told me they are generally peaceful, and I may or may not have issues with my other two triggers once the Niger matures, as the Niger is slightly more aggressive than they are. He didn't think so though since the Niger is not even half the size of the others now. Also, he said the Niger is considered reef safe, with the exception that once an adult it will definitely eat crabs, snails, shrimp, and the like. Right now all three triggers swim together non-stop across the front of the tank. My tank is a 180, and besides the other two triggers, I have Clarkii clowns, yellow tang, tomini tang, coral beauty, and assorted blennies.

I ended up going to a different LFS just to look around today and found a great bargain. I got a 3 inch Niger Trigger for only 17 bucks!! The tank he was in was pretty cool. There was probably close to 15 Niger Trigs in it all swimming together like a school.

Put him in QT and is already eating some of the flakes! But thats pretty common with triggers.

This store had a lot of realy good prices. There were 2 beautiful 7 inch clown triggers for only 69 bucks!! I was very tempted but I knew I would regret it. They had huge Picasso triggers for only 20 bucks! And 6inch Raccon B/F for only 22 bucks.

Wet web media is a very good sight and has never led me astray. They're completely right about Niger triggers being aggresive. Just about all triggers are aggresive. You were smart to get the smaller one. I would not have recomended the 5 incher. Every trigger I've ever had started out ok but eventually began attacking tank mates. Good luck with yours. You should be fine while he's in the 3" to 4" range.

Yeah I guess it just depends on the specific individual. Hopefully he will be compatable with my current fish.
