anyone have any ideas of to keep rowaphos in a TLF reactor, i am afraid it is going to flow through the sponge into the tank.

the reactor came with a ball valve if i slow the flow down enough would that keep it in there, i have heard horror stories about carbon getting out of a bag or reactor and getting chopped up in the return pump and blacking out the tank so i am fearful of the rowa even though i know its not carbon

thanks
matt

I have had some problems with my reactor and rowa recently. I was running carbon in the bottom and rowa on the top with a pad between. the flow forced the entire contents to the top of the reactor while I was gone and some of the rowa went into my sump but caused no problems whatsoever. the rowa simply sat a the bottom of the sump and I siphoned out later. It did not cause and "blackout" problems at all. there was probably about 20 ml of rowa that was expelled from the reactor.

My problem was not the sponge, I think it was too high of flow for the reactor and compounding the problems was the carbon in the bottom which I believe trapped some air and maybe detritus which caused the pressure to increase and force the contents to the upper portion of the reactor. A finer sponge at the top may help though. I am fairly new the the rowa reactor thing so maybe someone else here on the forums might have some better insight on how to set the proper flow and prevent this problem.

It's best to just run your chosen phosphate remover media by itself in a reactor. And you should set the flow so that the top of the media moves a little.

GFO breaks apart easily. It's brittle. It should not be churning hard enough to worry about it escaping. A gentle roll is all you want. Any harder than that and it will break apart. It will not get into your tank if the flow is slow...
