HOB overflow question

im going to be helping out a friend with his tank that he just got a HOB overflow and sump for. i believe its the kind that uses a U shaped clear tube.

my question is what it the best way to get it running with the sump. how do you start the syphon and pump without spilling to much water?

anyone know of a link to a video about it. i'm sure its pretty easy but ive never seen it done.

Airline tubing up the tube and suck on it till you get it started and tank the airhose.

Use an airline hose and put it in the u tube till it is at the top of the U. Then suck out the air and the siphon will start. Leaving a little air in the u tube should be no problem.

Be sure both the boxes are full of water first, then as above, insert airline to the top of the U, put it on the overflow and suck out the air.

As long as there isn't a build up of air in the U tube he should be ok. U tubes tend to be better about restarting once the power comes back on. Just make sure to watch for air build up and to clean it.
