Lawnmower Blenny eye looks different than the other.
Ijust got a lawnmower Blenny, he's pretty big about 3". I noticed that one eye is nice and black and the other seems to be kind of glazed over kinda a shinyness to it.
1. Is that a problem? 2. normal? 3. Will it go back to black like the other? 4. I see him nipping at the live rocks, does this mean he is getting some food off of it? I put in some green seaweed on a clip, and there is a pretty good chunk out of it, so I'm assuming he ate some maybe. I don't think my clowns or green chromis, or yellow goby would have ate it? thanks. Cory. |

Not sure about the first 3 questions, but those fish do scavenge for algaes on live rock. If you've got some in there, then it's getting some nutrition, but I'm sure it will appreciate other feedings (seaweed is a good idea, other flakes/frozens are good too).

bacterial infection; he's scraped it. you're doing right with the seaweed: also try Formula Two frozen cubes. Spirulina with squid and very smelly, like a big plate of Italian food to us. That may pique his appetite. If that eye doesn't clear up by tomorrow, get some Maracyn and a treatment tank, fill with tank water, treat him while supplying frozen cubes, according to instructions on packet. Don't do it in your display tank, whatever you do: you'd kill your tank and force a cycle.

Also what if I can't gatch him and just leave him be, will he die from a bad eye?

Could the one cloudy eye be a symptom of flukes? If so, I've seen the owner of my favorite LFS, fresh water dip the fish for 5 minutes and all the clear flukes die, whiten up and drop to the bottom of the bag.
If THAT were the problem.

It's probably bacterial infection.
this stuff would be good: anything Maracyn that says it's ok in salt water. http://www.aquariumguys.com/maracyn-plus-32.html IT doesn't sound like flukes to me. You might cross-check by posting in the Disease forum. You'll get an anwer within an hour or so, usually. squid is part of the recipe for Formula 2 frozen cubes. Bacterial infections can get quite serious, and are easy to treat, but require housing the fish in treated water for a specific length of time. Worse, they indicate a fish not in great physical condition. You might look at a product called Selcon, which you can soak food in, and which is a general nutritional boost to a fussy eater. If you can buy a piece of dry dead coral from your lfs, and put that in your tank, it will probably coat up with hair algae he would eat in a fairly short time. I wouldn't get one of his regular tank rocks if he is warning you about flukes. That's pretty scary---but honest of him. Doesn''t sound like a bad shop, but do be careful of fish. I'd hold off buying fish until he gets his fluke problem under control.
