PH Probe life

I came across an interesting statement made by a seller of ph probes which states "the expected life of an electrode is 12-18 months from date of manufacture whether sitting on a shelf or constant use."

Is there any validty to this and if so, how do we know how long the probes we purchase have been sitting around before we get them?

Interesting to know how long people have kept their probes before they became ineffective .
