Live rock still alive?

When buying Live rock how does one know if its alive or dead? What do you look for? This is in regards to live rock that is being purchased second hand.

Generally, if it is and has been in saltwater, I would assume it is live. You can smell the rock as well. If it reeks like the living dead, then your rock is live, but has had a large amount of dieoff.

Ron

Agreed with flamron, I got a drop shipment of liverock and it smelled horrible by the time I got it to the house. I knew I had to cure it for a while before it would be good in the tank, but it had life on it. As long as it's in saltwater and not pure white, I consider it to be seeded well enough to be live in time.

in it.Can you still use it?How do I cure it if I am able to?

Mine was pure white after I destoyed it with a bristle brush to remove unwanted hair algae.

I'm sure it was still full of bacteria. Not really sure how much the color of the rock matters.
In most cases, this is an indication of how long its been in water, but in mine it was ofcourse not.

Do stores ever scrub things clean?
