What brand of salt mix does everyone prefer? Any I should avoid?

Becky, that's like asking what kind of live rock, bulbs, etc everyone prefers.

Personally, I use Coralife and have always had good success with it. I've also used Instant Ocean and Marine Environment in the past with equal success.

You will definitely get an extremely varied opinion on this one. I like Oceanic, but have tried several others with success also. I really think you have to find one that works well for you and stick with it.

Instant Ocean Reef Crystals from Dr Foster & Smith. Inexpensive good salt from a very good company.

but it does all come down to preference. There was a salt mix diagram somewhere showing the contents of each. Does anyone have access to that??

I think most if not all the salt mixes are good. I personally use seachem reef salt. I guess it may be better to ask if anyone out there have bad experiences with a particular brand so you could eliminate.

I like to use Marine Environment salt by Aqua Craft. Its made in Hayward, CA and my lfs uses and stocks it. So i try to keep things local. Not cheap, but you get a quality product that is very uniformed and clean. It comes w/ a liquid bottle that you add to the premixed salt to get all the trace nutrients that many people end up having to supplement. I am yet to lose something in transport/acclimation from my lfs- i attribute this largely to this quality salt.

Just my two cents.

Reef Crystals. I have tried others, but always go back to Reef Crystals.

the cheapest common brand I can find locally (that would be red sea right now. at one time it was $5.99 50lb bags of instant ocean). I have tried about them all without noticing any difference to my tanks other than cost, calcium and alk levels. even if the regular red sea was low on calcium and alk it would be cheaper for me to dose than to spend $10 more a bucket but my current batch has been testing at 440ppm and my tank is too new and void to monitor mag and other elements. my tanks usually eventually need alk dosing regardless of salt used so thats not a factor either.
I have yet to find the perfect salt anyway. seachem reefsalt leaves residue, oceanic is too high in calcium, instant ocean too low, red sea hard to disolve, reef crystals inconsistant testing ect ect ect.

I always use reef crystals, as it's pretty cheap and serves my purposes.
