Phosban Reactor Question

I have a TLF Phosban Reactor and I'm having troubles with the media shifting. After running about a week the media moves to the top and the pads shift. I'm using a minijet 404 and it is set so the media is barely tumbling. I have placed the pads according to the instructions. Is this a common problem or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for the help

I have 2 TLF reactors in series: 1=carbon; 2=GFO ... the cabon has shifted up one me once.

The minijet 404 I was using was in a an area with lots of detritus and I'm guessing that it got pumped in and maybe plugged up the sponges and/or carbon causing the incoming water to push all the media up ... just a guess.

Do most phosbane reactors come with these "pads" or are you guys talking about something else that is seperate?

I run mine in series as well and ocasionaly have that problem with the carbon. It has always been because of detritus buildup. It doesn't bother me much since I change the carbon regularly. I'd bet that's the issue here.

The TLF reactors come with two foam pads; one for the top and one for the bottom. The instructions show how/where to install them. You can order new pads from TLF - or a good LFS might sell them. They keep the media from escaping top and bottom...

O awesome. That is the one I was planning on getting.
What do you all feel about running rowaphos AND carbon in the same reactor. I know someone who puts the rowaphos on the bottom and a decent amount more carbon on top.

The shifting action may have something to do with the type of media you are using. I have not had a problem with PhosBan media moving to the top. However, carbon will shift around some, due to air inside the particles - it doesn't hurt anything. Ensure you rinse the media prior to using.

Carbon expends faster than the PhosBan, so if you put them in the same reactor, it may be problematic when it comes time to change the carbon and the PhosBan still has some life....especially given the cost.

Aaa I see.....how long does phosban normally last?
And carbon goes for 2-6 weeks depending on how aggressive you are?....correct?

Depends on your particular setup, bioload, etc. From what I see on RC, seems most folks change the carbon at approx the 4 week mark. PhosBan usually 2-3 months, but these are just generalizations. Need to adjust based on how your tank responds/testing, etc.
