brown slime dinoflagellates progress (pics)

Ok guys here is how the 5 days of darkness went. As you can see from pic 1 I had a bad problem and 5 days is about as long as I would ever take this but it depends on how bad you have it.

These are the pics before I started.

this is the first pic at about 30 hours of darkness.

here is the progress at the 72 hour point

here we are today 5 days after lights out

I must stress that this is not a substitute for finding the root cause of the problem and i have now changed the way I go about some of my husbandry skills. Also the corals only did 3 days of darkness as the rocks never had any on really and to tell you the truth I dont think its wise to make them go any longer.

Dave

What's the difference between dinoflagellates and cyano?

I think cyano is the name to sum all the different types of bacteria, were as dinoflagellates is the name of this type of bacteria. However I am sure I will be corrected any min now. lol

If lighting was the only thing you changed it will be back within a few days of the lights being turned on. I tried the same trick and it did look better but it didn't last. Then I started dosing sugar and it lasted much longer. As soon as I see the stuff on my sand I add a little dose of sugar and it knocks it back for awhile.

The addition of a fuge seems to be quite effective with such problems, I've read. Hopefully you've done enough. If not, then man, you've got some stubborn dinos.

Did you have that stuff on your rockwork as well? If not, I would lean more toward those being diatoms. JMO
