Hello ! Overview

Hello,

I didn't know the Reef Central (sorry) but It's amazing !
My reef tank is four years and the system is based on 'Jaubert Method'.

In may of this year, my tank has crashed : certainly 3 days without oxygen and light. All animals were dead with the exception of two hard corals and three soft corals. The reason ? Power outage !

At the moment, I begin a 'new' Jaubert tank with the same substrate and same stones. After three months and half, the startup is more long that I thought... Why ?

The bacteries population are already present in the sand and in the stones.

Have you an opinion about it ?

A bientôt,

Chris

Nobody has an experience of Jaubert method ? or DSB method...

My main question is : what is the effect of the stopping of nitrogen cycle on bacterias population ?

Regards

Chris

Not sure I fully understand your question.....

The start up is taking longer than you thought? meaning you had no Ammonia spike? If you used the same substrate and majority of the original tank's water...I wouldnt expect that you would. Maybe a small one if any. Have you been testing regularly? what are your water perameters now?

Hello toolfan,

To speak clearly :

Q : The start up is taking longer than you thought?
Yes, I think that exactly.

Q : meaning you had no Ammonia spike?
I had the ammonia spike (a little) when I have changed my water at 100% (after the crash)

Q : Have you been testing regularly? what are your water perameters now?
Not regulary but my NO3 was lower than 20mg / l

Thanks for your interest. My main criteria is visual : my tank is the behin glass is covered by algae (totally) and the water is slightly brown (under the blue light.)

My fundamental question is : how to know the bacterias populations in the sand and stones, quantity and type ?
By chemical testing NO2, NO3.. That is also the biology !

Regards,

Chris
