And I'm sorry, but neither one of those two are experts on skimmers.
Seriously I don't have to do a darn thing. Its up to you guys to come to your own conclusions. You can ignore my claims or you can put some merit into them ~ its all up to you. I've done my research on the subject now go along and do yours. I am not here to publish manifestos and scientific journals. Just here to share what I know and have learned over the years.

Besides I never made the claim you are referring to above. You manufactured that one yourself.

The above is most definitely an insinuation that they dont.

Well it was not an insinuation. Skimmer's may help with chemical warfare to an extent. I just have not seen anything in my readings on coral warfare as to how effective they are at it ~ hence the question.

Everything that I have read suggests the liberal use of activated carbon can be effective at removing many of these compounds. Its probable that a skimmer can remove some of these compounds and I concede this.

No two reefs are exactly alike. No two reefers are exactly alike. Skimmers are proven to work through the many hobbyists who have used them. Can you have a nice reef without one? Sure you can. Can you be successful without ozone, or UV or carbon. Sure. If your setup is working for you then fine.

I run 3 canister filters on my reef. It works for me. If I was to recommend using them here I'd get flamed. I love the simplicity of canister filtration, and if they create some nitrate I have ways to reduce that. Yep I dose sugar daily. It works for me. No nitrates in my reef.

I also run ozone, UV and a skimmer. Do I need all that? Probably not but it's all working and I love the gadgets.

So to ask a question like: Can I keep a nice reef without this or that is going to give you every opinion on the block. You have to read and then apply what you want with what you learn and take pride in your reef when it thrives.

My nitrates and phosphates are always zero, and all my hard corals have done really well, so my crappy skimmer doesn't seem to be causing any problems.
Sounds similar to the situation I was in. I had a skimmer that wasn't producing enough skimmate to require emptying the cup. So I turned mine off and haven't noticed a difference either in water clarity or nitrate level. I suspect you could turn yours off as well and be fine.
