A UPS is an Uninterruptible Power Supply, a device that is used to protect sensitive equipment from power spikes. It also has a short amount of battery power in the case of power outage so you can save what you're doing, power down safely, etc. The batteries usually only last 10 to 20 minutes for a normal computer system (500W).
The Xantrex is more of an advanced battery backup system. It, and similar devices and setups, will power equipment for longer periods of time (into hours and days). Setup is the same as for a UPS, but you DO have to make sure your equipment can handle the choppy sine wave. The Tunze Nanostreams can. We bought ours on Amazon for just over $150. |

I have my UPS hooked up only to 2 powerheads which together draw 28 watts. I figure these two powerheads are enough to aerate the whole tank.
