Experience with Flame Angels?

Considering a Flame Angel. I know they can be a risk putting them in a reef. I'd like to get some feedback on who has had them w/ problems, who has had them with no problems. I have an acan that is my pride and joy and I dont want it being niped at.

I have had one in my tank for 2 years now and he is quite the gentlemen. I never see him nipping as I feed twice daily. The bio's I have read on them indicate that they feed on crustaceans in the wild so lots of mysis etc.
Good Luck

Only had mine for a couple of months and so far, so good. I've read that the juveniles are less likely to pick at corals and they can resort to nipping after a couple of years. I'm hoping mine will be an exception. And yours too.

My flame has been in my tank for almost 9 years (bought just before Y2K). It is a semi-reef so just a few corals (brains, open brains, torch, srooms, ect), and a squamosa clam. Has been great!!

No complaints so far about mine, other than that he was a finicky eater at first. He's picked up on feeding cues from other fish and now takes about anything.

i have 2 flames in my 180 reef tank for a couple of years without any problems. I intended to have only one, and try it with caution then a fish supplier sent me 2 by mistake so I put both in. They bickered and chased each other for a week or 2 but now co-exist peacefully and with all the other fish. Don't touch the clams or corals. Very colorful and nice.

Some flames are coral pickers and will munch on everything in sight.
Some are model citizens.
Some are hiders and you rarely see them.

Crap shoot...take a roll.

Mine picked on my brain coral , I had to move the coral to another tank, he leaves all the soft corals alone. Other than that, he's great. Had mine for 6 months now.

Sounds like the general consensus is that they are a relatively safe bet. I might pull the trigger this weekend.

There are horror stories, but I agree. Keep em fed. Mine is no problem with two tridacnas and many SPS. Every once in a while I see him take a single nip at my yellow porites, but I think he's exploring more than eating...
