Cooking marco / BFS rock
My plan for cooking this rock was: darkness + RO/DI saltwater + heater + powerheads.
Is going with the normal salinity and ro/di water absolutely necessary? Or can I save some salt and all day pumping RO? |

I would use tap (so long as you don't have copper contamination of your water), the water is going to get filthy anyway. If you're going to do several rinses and water changes followed by a long "cooking" period, I would use regular tap for the rinses and saltwater for the last long cooking period.
The thinking is that the first rinses are meant to get most of the dead material out of the rocks (and marco rocks have quite a bit of it), while the cooking period allows bacteria to colonize the rock and process the remaining nutrients. Last edited by LockeOak; 09/08/2008 at 11:17 AM. |

This question was asked twice just yesterday. Go back a few pages and you'll find it.

I came across one post but it was more about using acid and bleach. I do not need this for fairly clean dry rock from bulk reef supply. Its just a bit dusty.

I would not use tap water, but salinity can be lowered a bit. Do you have another tank setup? I always just used the water I pulled out of the display tank during water changes to replace the water in the bins for curing rock. It worked out well enough for me.

Ahh good idea, that would save me some water.
I talked to some people and I think I might just hose it off some then soak in normal salt water. |
