New Type of critter in the fuge....
I have noticed that I have an explosion of what looks exactly like really small white / clear shrimp.
They are definitely not pods, which also seem to be exploding as well (and are chasing these "shrimp") I haven't had the time to take a pic... Also about 5 mnts ago I put in about 20 ghost shrimp in my fuge, but I don't think that these are them (especially that they are max about 1/4") Any thoughts?

How about isopods (not the bad kind). I've suddenly got tons of them in my fuge. They seem to lie on their side and excavate sand kinda like a pistol shrimp. They started out white but as they get bigger they get darker red/brown.

Are they in the water column or mostly on substrate?

Do you have pistol shrimp in your system, or other shrimps? I have had several different type sof shrimp breed in my system, and the end result is a profusion in my refugium... still, great food for the rest of the system...
A picture would help a great deal. |

I cant speak to all shrimp, but in my SCUBA experience, with night dives on reefs, it seems to me that many shrimp's eyes also glow when a light is shone on them... but I dont this to be true of all shrimp, per se... but it is true of many...

Well I was trying to get a good shot of them, but they are too quick, they don't stop for a second.
But after really looking at them last night, they are def. small shrimp. Long tails, and multiple arms... like I said earlier they look like small pistols... Has anyone else seen these before?

mysis enter via live rock, live sand, etc.
They are a great thing to have in there... I even sometimes think to feed mine in the refugium... a bit of phytoplankton |

Glad you found a match. Pod populations surge in a boom & bust type pattern. You'll have none, then tons, then none. Various pods become dominant for a while, likely based on food supply and predation. You may see tons of mysis or mysids, only to later only find amphipods. The closer you look, the more variety you'll see. Check the substrate where it touches the glass, including the bottom two inches. Use a magnifying glass and you'll see critters you didn't even know were in your system. |
