Clear slime , never saw this before ..

A little background..........

My serpent star was looking and acting ill. The ends of some tentacles were degrading. I moved it to my q tank that has some live rock rubble. I tried to feed the starfish a small piece of scallop on a feeding skewer.

When the starfish wouldn't eat it I tried to remove the scallop. It was only in the water about 10 minutes. As it was lifted out of the water a 2" ball of clear slime had engulfed the piece of scallop, kind of a cross between jello and snot. It slid off the feeding stick and back into the water and disappeared.

What was it ?

No fish in the tank.

It was more like a ball a snot.

Just a guess but maybe Oenone fulgida? It's a worm that secretes mucus like you described and preys on mollusks. I don't know if it will go after frozen food at all. Its a worm that is likely more common in our reef tanks than most suspect. Its just hard to catch a glimpse of being nocturnal, sensitive to light and vibration and lightning fast.

Good call

Saw a worm retract when I approached the tank and assumed it was a bristle worm. But it was lightning fast ..........

There's more info here and your guess is probably accurate.

BTW, a scallop is a mollusk body part .
