mixing salt
I'm resetting up a 150 gallon with a sump and a fuge, Now I have about 120 gallons of ro/di water made ( it's in a few different brute pails) now I'm I better off filling my tank with the 120 gallons of ro/di then adding the salt, then after 24 hours, add my sand and rocks. then should I make the rest of my ro/di water (approx 60 gallons) mix that in the brute pail and add it to the tank. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to start the tank with all the water I have to make.
Thanks Gus

I guess I could put the sand in first, then put in the ro/di, then salt will that make less of a storm?

Yeah it will make less of a storm, you will just have to make sure the tank cycles good incase any salt settles into the sand. You could alwatys mix up the salt water in the rubbermaids, then dump all that in the tankand test it after a couple days to make sure it is where you want it.

thanks, I was hoping to mix it in the tank because I have the water in so many brutes and I figured I have a huge glass box to mix it in. I might as well use it.

I like sand and rocks first because I think it is easier to form the rocks without water. just my $.02

I was thinking that also, my problem is mixing all the salt for all the water I need. I was trying to avoid mixing salt in the tank with any sand or rocks in it, but if I mixed it out of the tank in the pails I would need about 5 or 6 brute pails going. it's just a whole lot of water to mix up.

I would personally mix the water before putting into tank. Like it was mentioned earlier salt could settle somewhere and play havic on your levels later. If you don't want to mix in barrels then mix it in tank before putting LR and Sand. when it is time to put that in just pull some water out into barrels low enough to put rocks and sand in then fill back up. just make sure u pour water back in through a strainer of some sort so that it doesn't kick up alot of sand when u putt itback in.

Mix it out of the tank and then add it to the tank with the sand in it. Depending on the amount of sand you have it can trap the fresh water and then later a bubble of fresh will suddenly mix with the salt causing a drop in salinity.

Now I guess I can add the saltwater slowly over a few days. I have about 100 gallons of ro/di ready to mix, is it alright the let the sand and saltwater sit stagnate in the tank while I make the rest of the saltwater which will take a few days or should I add a powerhead to let it circulate.

Def. mix the saltwater out of the tank... might be tedious, but safer....
