skimmer ?

I'm in the process of upgrading from a 55 to a 90G . Do you size the skimmer for total amount of water ( tank and sump ) or size of display . The skimmer I have now is the AquaC Remora good up to 120 gallons . And if I use the Remora on new tank do you need a skimmer on a frag tank ( the 55) . Thanks for any help

honestly, you throw away all the skimmer manufacturer ratings and go with common consensus. I'd use the remora on a nano tank, something 30 gallons or less. For a 90, I'd look at a larger needlewheel design (though that would require a sump in most cases). Something like the EuroReef RS135 or RS180, one of the middle line octopus skimmers, etc.

A frag tank would appreciate a skimmer as well, but water changes should suffice if you have a relatively low bioload.

If you've got the resources, I would skim the frag tank for good measure.

If you don't have the money, then don't. Just be careful to keep your bioload down.

My 90 has a built in overflow so I plan on having a sump in the basement so I don't have to have all the extras and noise in the main tank . My 55 looks like a crowded mess and water changes are a pain . it might cost me a bit extra to get the water pumped back upstairs but I think it will be worth it .

Remoras are OK but everyone I know who has run one on a large tank has eventually ended up with nutrient problems. There are a couple good HOB options. One is the tubofloater which is a needle wheel design you would be pushing its limits on a 90.

The best HOB in my opinion is a deltec. A friend of mine ran one on a 90 and it was excellent. Any deltec comes with a hefty price tag though and you could probably install a sump with a decent octopus, ASM, or Euroreef for less $$$

That's the tell, how much is collected from the tank. You can measure things like air intake and pump flow rate, but the real understanding is by the amount of skimmate that's removed.
