Did I get ripped off?

I bought live rock, and was doing a cycle, curing on a new tank. I have alot of brown algae/ diatoms coming out of the rocks and all over the glass and substrate. I have have had the rock about a week and a half. I was wondering when the smell came in, or am I killing my rock?

your always going to get die off on live rock. the diatoms will go away in a few days by themselves.

+1 on leaving the lights off until you need them for something. Sounds like you're having a perfectly normal cycle to me.

With fresh live rock, you can get the smell pretty quick...sometimes just a day or two...sometimes not at all If you haven't got it after a week and half, you probably won't get much.

You may also want to check for micro bubbles in your tank as well as increasing your water flow. My supplier recommened that i try to eliminate the bubbles and increase flow. this quickly resolved the algae issues!!!!!

Increase flow and decrease bubbles? To get rid of algae? That's a new one on me. And here I've spent all these years thinking I needed to decrease nutrient levels in the water column.

after a little research i found out that in the process of quantum fracturing used by algae oil manufacturers they use micro bubbles to deliver nutrients to the algae cells at an accelerated rate thus promoting faster growth!!!!!!!!!!
