Crab id please
Hi, I Have pulled this crab out last night, i have had him for about a year. Started of about the size of a penny now he's 3-4" in size.
I added a clam last saturday and by sunday morning he was eaten, i have x2 clowns x1 chromis and x1 regal so i dont think they are responsible , in the last few months i have lost x2 firefish and x1 mandarin and a good few snails. Hopefully this guy is the culprit, any help would be much appreciated. thanks http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...Picture007.jpg http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...t=IMG00122.jpg The other pic is also a hitchhiker, i think it may be a chiton but not too sure

I'm going to tag along because I have a similar looking crab. He's white with black tipped claws. I haven't been able to ID him as well, but I feed him occasionally to keep him happy and passive. He stays hidden most of the time.

Not sure on the crab, but the other hitchhiker does look like a chiton to me. Chiton's are reef safe. Here's mine:

Pointy tipped crabs usually also mean bad crab, I would probably play it safe and keep it out of the display.

Do you have a sump that you could banish him to?

That looks very much like the one we had to remove. They're vicious.

Black tipped parasitic crabs are probably bad. I'd remove him.
Chitons are very good! I love my chitons! Great for the sandbed too. |

Thanks for the responses everyone, i think looking at the other thread that it could well be a Gorilla crab, i put him in my smaller tank the other day at my office and i now have a missing fish there. He's on death row at the moment although i would like to keep him in his own tank.

Agree with all of the above - remove the crab asap.
Chitons will mow down algae, but I've seen them eat coralline too. May or may not be a big deal to some. Just fyi.
