Jumper, is it a bad sign?
One of my false percs off'd himself tonight via jumping out of the tank.
I know that this happens from time to time and I am going to put some eggcrate over my tank now, but is this a bad sign otherwise? Should I be concerned that something caused him to jump, or does it just happen sometimes? |

Did it happen when the lights when out for the night? Or possibly it was getting chased by another fish.

Ph - 8.3
Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 10ppm Phosphate - 0 Specific Gravity - 1.024 Temp - 78 (when he jumped, varies between 76-78) That's everything I have tests for. I do have a coral banded shrimp who has been taking the occasional swipe at the fish. I think the lights had fairly recently turned off. |

is your flow pointing upwards? if they are being chased, they tend to swim with an upward current and dart upwards to evade being chased.

Here's what I'm thinking....
The two false percs...are figuring out which is gonna be female, and which is going to male. So they're probably at that fighting "ima chance you around the tank" phase. I lost a perc to this exact scenario, she chased my male into a pump resulting in one less fishy to call my own. If this is a relatively new tank, and they havent officially paired off, one might have chased the other one out of the tank. If this is the case...it probably just shriveled up into a lil fish glob on your carpet. Its not a bad sign...just annoying. How old is your tank by the way? |

Indeed, they have not figured out who's going to be female. This is the most likely scenario. I just wanted to make sure that a perc jumping out wasn't, by general rule, a signal of a larger problem. It appears it isn't.
The tank has been up since August. |
