T5 Ho: Q & A

Hi All,

I've been in the hobby for about 6-7yrs. I have always used the combination of MH + PC's for livestock and its worked lovely.

I have now upgraded to a 100g, and I've gained some interest in the T5 HO style lighting. The growth and coloration results that I've seen with T5's are amazing; none that I've seen when I was using the MH + PC combo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, for tanks with livestock, the recommended lighting is typically 3watts per gallon.

My question is this; If I plan on going the T5 route, how many watts would be adequate for a 100g fish/livestock tank? Dims are standard 100g (60x18x23'ish).

Also, everytime I see tanks with T5's, the fixture is always directly above the surface. Is it okay to add space in-between the T5 fixture and the surface of the water, just as MH's or PC's?
