I have a fairly heavy bioload on my nano, and run a chaeto fuge that is about 1/3 the volume of the tank, and keep it lit 24/7---- I have absolutely no nitrates and have no need for dosing carbon.
I feed the fish several times a day, and I don't really hold back. The chaeto keeps the nitrates and even phosphates below levels my API kits can detect.

I ran Prodibio for a year and had undetectable nitrates and phosphates. My chaeto shriveled up to almost nothing. I run a heavy bioload and feed heavy also.
