Is a 250w MH bulb too much?

I have a 40 gallon breeder and want to put a 250 bulb over it. Currently I have a 150w bulb and 4 t5's pushed by an icecap ballast to supplement it. I have mostly SPS . Heat shouldn't be an issue since it is an open setup. Would I gain or hurt anything by upgrading it? I have all the parts laying around to install a 250 watt mh setup.

Does not sound like too much. Just keep it higher than normal, since your tank is only 16" high.

My corals came from deeper tanks with 250 and 400 watt systems, but I would guess are now used to the 150watt light. Would it be wise to acclimate the corals to the stronger light?
