enough O2 in tank?
Im going to be starting a 30gal salt water tank this month. how do i know if i have enough O2 flow. To start it im going to have a penguin bio wheel filter 150 gph(<---i know its lame) and im going to have a hydro Koralia 1(400 gph). Is that enough? Do i have to add an air stone, i really dont want to. Need advice to make sure i have enough flow and O2 in tank.! I will be adding a canister filter in about 4 months. Thanks for any advice.

Although their filtration capability isn't spectacular, those little bio-wheel filters do a pretty good job of aeration. They usually create decent surface agitation due to the fact they sit right at the water's surface. They do very little for water movement though. That would be sufficient filtration for fish, but you probably would have a hard time keeping much other than zoanthids/mushrooms/other softies in that type of setup.

You'll get enough O2 transfer as long as you constantly have the water surface disturbed, which you should with that biowheel (though agreed, it's not the best bet). A nice hang-on skimmer would be better. You can also aim the koralia upwards to bust the surface a little. Good luck!

that's what i used to do with my tank. just put a HOB filter, but remember to take the bio wheel out, that's just a nitrate factory so take that out!
