new set up, whats your thoughts?

new to the forums and thought id ask a few questions on my new set up im getting together for my bedroom, tapped for space so i decided to go with a 29gal, i have gathered a HOB refugium, 250w mh cpf light and a 350gal canister filter

normally i would use a sump but this will be in the upper level of our home and i was worried of over flow in the event of a power outage

now my main question is, what media for the filter? when starting in the hobby i was told by people that have been in the hobby for years to use bio media but have read negitive feedback on here about that so i and looking for a point in the right direction

keep in mind ive only been in the hobbly for about a year with my only guidence being friends and a couple local guys with a coral farm

thanks for any replies
