What about 1 1/2" Sch40 instead of Sch80 bulkheads?
I wanted Sch80 bulkheads but they only come in slip/thread for 1 1/2" pipe. I really need al the room in the bank of the tank I can get and think I need slip/slip to get it. Odd as it is, there is no HD Sch80 slip/slip for 1 1/2" pipe. My only option now, is to go to a Sch40 unit but I wonder how flimsy, or strong, it is compared to the Sch80's I have?
Also, dont they have a smaller hole they go into? If so, not that I drilled for a HD Sch80 hole, will it still seal if i do use the Sch40 bulkheads? |

Sch40 use a smaller hole. If you drilled for a ch80 the sch40 wont seal. that being said I have 15+ sch40 bulkheads in my system and I have no issues with any of them (once I finally got them to seal, but thats a sch40 and 80 problem). I will say that sch40 is a bit finicky to get a super tight seal compared to 80, but a dab of silicone on the seal takes care of that.

If I was to align the rubber gasket on the Sch40 with the hole I made for the Sch80 evenly, all the way around, then totally backfilled the area with silicone and tightned the nut down, What do you think the chances are it would hold a good seal? I would think it "could/would" as we use silicone for the seams, but, I have nothing for comparison to play with at this time.

IMO it will eventually fail. They really need proper sized holes. SC40 bulkheads crack pretty easy after a few years. Tightening it against a hole that is too large will cause the flanged side to bend wrong adding stress. The flange is usually where they crack anyways so putting extra stress on that part isn't usually a good idea.
