135 gallon FOWLR without SUMP?

Okay ... could I keep a 135 gallon FOWLR tank successfully without a sump and simply use an Octopus hob skimmer, 150 lbs of live rock, with maybe four Koralia 4's in each corner? The fish I'm looking to keep are listed below... also interested in other fish anybody wants to recommend. Let me know. Thanks

Picasso Trigger
Dog Face Puffer
Green Bird Wrasse
Mimic Tang
Maybe a tomato clown

i dont see any reason why that would work out for you as long as you do regular water changes like you should.

I do not think you will need that many koralia 4's for a non reef tank.

You may also want to run a cannister filter with carbon.

Thanks guys ... I thought the four koralia 4's may be an overkill ... would two koralia 4's on opposite ends do the trick? Tank is 6' long. Also, which hob skimmer would you recommend ... octopus or bakpak? I also have two Eheim 2217 canister filters on the tank for the freshwater fish ... I was going to sell these when I changed it over to a fowlr tank ... should I keep one and put carbon an lr rubble in it? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks.

You should keep one, since you do not have a sump to ruin media in. You can use it exactly as you stated. Then if you have algea issues youcan run phosphate media as well. You will probably be good with 2 or 3 k4s and the flow from the cannister filter.

I highly recomend those phospure pads. They make your water invisable.

I'd keep both canisters for chemical media and (gasp) mechanical filtration, as long as you're committed to changing or cleaning the media regularly.

Most HOB skimmers will be worthless on a tank that big. Bakpak's can be overwhelmed on a 55, much less a 135.

My HOB AquaC Remora pulls a ton of crap out of my water, it works great. On a 6 foot tank without a sump, maybe try 2 of each - Two HOB Skimmers, Two K4s, and Two Canisters (one with carbon, one with Phos Sponge). But as der_wille mentioned, be prepared to clean your canisters at least twice a month.

If there's mechanical media in the canisters, try more like once a week. You want to export waste, not capture it and allow it to break down.
