Power Out!
OMG the power went out last night from 11p.m. to 5:18a.m. woke up to darkness and freaked out about my tank. 90 gal, 10 gal sump, and 7 gal hospital tank not much wildlife in them but concerned for everyones safety....my question is how long is too long for the power to be out.... what to you do when it goes out? Do you have a battery backup?
Thanks, Kym |

Not much you can do about it now, unfortunately. If power ever goes out (and I know about it) I wrap my tank in a big furniture moving blanket and (depending on how long it's out) go by with a glass pitcher to move some of the water around a few scoops at a time.

I purchased the Vortech dual pump system with the battery backup. this will provide circulation during the outage, with one pump on the battery it is supposed to run for 24 hours or more. I hooked up both, so I am expecting only half that.
I also have a 2000 watt Honda generator in the garage.

Six hours is not usually going to cause much of a problem unless the tank is way over stocked. For longer outages something like Guy suggests is great.

I had my power out for more than 36 hours once.
I bought a battery powered air stone, extra batteries, and those tinfoil type emergency blankets that reflect heat. With the airstone runing, and the blankets wrapped around the tank (90Gallons) my tank made it through with no problems. All for less than $30.00...

Hi Michelle,
Long time no see. Have you been hiding out on other forums?

Battery powered airstones can be had for cheap and be put in line so they come on when the power goes out even when your not home!
