michellejy/pittbug 120g build
We started buying parts and components for this over a year ago. My wife has had salt water tanks before, but I'm a complete novice to keeping fish of any variety, so it felt like I was definitely jumping into the deep end.
When we were looking at different kinds of fish tanks we thought I'd be cool to do a reef tank because the variety of animals and corals would make it extremely interesting for the kids to watch and enjoy. What I didn't know is all the plumbing and equipment necessary. We had our fair share of problems assembling and getting the right parts, but in the end, the vendors all came through. I'd like to especially thank the guys at Phishybusiness for their input and continued support and advice. I'll post a few key pictures here, but there's more in my flickr set. Protein Skimmer Left side of 40gal sump from Phishybusiness Right side of sump Starting to fill Just added salt 98lbs of live rock from Tourkid Added another 80lbs of base rock Just added sand T5 lighting |

My wife told me to add meshing to the back of the canopy because some of the wrasses are known to jump. Ok, no big deal, I fitted some screen door meshing to the back and thought I was done. We got an orange hooded wrasse from Eric on here and the day after it decides to jump into the overflow. I didn't even think to cover those. I pulled out the return line and durso to make room for the net, then realized I had just drained the overflow. The wrasse was curled up and stuck in the corner because the bulkhead prevented me from getting the net close to it. After gently nudging it, it flopped out and I scooped it up. It went and hid in the rocks, so I quickly covered the overflows with mesh. Since that one was dumb enough to jump into the overflow, it's now called "my wife's dumb wrasse". |
